B K Modi-controlled Spice Mobile is all set to launch its GSM phone for Rs 800 this month. Branded as the 'People's Phone', the handset, a very basic model, doesn't have a display screen. Hundreds of sellers of eBay have called for a global boycott of the online auction giant on May 1 over payment, pricing and feedback changes which they allege will hurt their profits. The sellers, for instance, are distressed that they can no longer give buyers negative feedback, and that eBay will increase the fees that are paid as a percentage of the final sales price. Sabare International, a Karur-based home furnishings company, has taken ICICI Bank to court over a foreign exchange derivative contract. The company has requested the Karur civil court to declare the contract void. This is the second company to have gone into a legal dispute with ICICI Bank after the Chennai-based Sundaram Multi Pap, which had alleged "mis-selling of certain foreign exchange derivative contracts for speculative purposes".
The media and entertainment industry in 2007 grew by an estimated 17 per cent over the previous year to touch Rs 51,300 crore (Rs 513 billion), according to a recent Ficci-PwC 2008 report. Edward Orange, director, Lotus Business Unit (Software Group), IBM Asia-Pacific, said, "Since it's free, Lotus Symphony is a formidable challenge to Microsoft's new Office 2007 suite in the market for Windows-based productivity software."
What could compound the problem is that many of these firms do not account for the debt. In other words, they are not providing for the borrowings on an annual basis over the life of the instrument.
